The road to heaven is paved with Mary Wiles' victims.

Los Angeles isn’t just a playground for those searching for a new start. It’s a darker and more dangerous place than they’ll ever know. But Mary’s not fooled.

With her hands full trying to play human while looking for a way back to heaven, Mary doesn’t have time to polish her halo let alone solve a murder case. But when she finds out demons are responsible, Mary just can’t help herself.

When Mary makes a mistake causing her best friend to be taken, she will have to make a choice: sacrifice an innocent for the chance to get her revenge or lose everything she has worked for. Mary starts to realize there is no clear path back to heaven without becoming tainted herself.

So Mary is really Muriel – an Angel – well actually an Archangel:

Muriel means “Perfume of God.” This is a female archangel who brings peace and harmony to one’s life. She is responsible for carrying around the message of peace and harmony to people on the Earth.

Her angelic responsibilities also include tending the plants and animals on this Earth.

Depicted with a crown made of flowers, it is known that when she is in your presence, you will smell the scent of your favorite flower. When this happens, it will confirm that Archangel Muriel is somewhere near you. [https://www.guardian-angel-reading.com/blog-of-the-angels/archangel-muriel/]

But now she is on Earth after her wings have been removed by demons, she is not quite as peaceful as before – at least when it comes to fighting demons.

She is also not quite au fait with human behaviour and norms and speech. Which gives a lighter touch to this novel which could otherwise be rather dark as is it mostly about the fights she gets into when dealing with possessed humans.

Erin writes a good story and this is a good series of novels about Muriel and how she adapts to her new life and new companions.

A thousand years. No memories. Five powerful mages dying to save her. In the city of Neo New York, mages rule the world. People like Eva, the non-magical kind, mean nothing. The only destiny waiting for her will be to serve the mages for the rest of her days. Except Eva isn’t like other humans. Locked in a tower for a crime she doesn’t even remember, Eva is saved by none other than some of Neo New York’s most prestigious mages, and they won’t let anyone take their new toy away from them. When Eva’s memories make a reappearance, she realizes she might be a little bit more than just a nuisance. Now, Eva must dodge jealous ex-lovers and ambitious council members, all while keeping her past a secret. Whoever said fairy tales had happy endings hasn’t walked a minute in Eva’s shoes.

A fantasy take on the Rapunzel story, with a multiverse where Magic arrived sometime around the 14th century and everything changed. Some people are born with Magic and take a high place in society and  the ‘humans’ those without magic, are basically slaves.

I found this story good as far as it went but in my opinion, it left with too much of a cliff-hanger I realise that this is now a series but..

I also thought it was too short and wanted it to be fleshed out more. I didn’t feel invested in any of the characters enough to really want to read more.

One woman. Three men. All Dragons. What could go wrong? Maya Rose has a problem. She's the last in her line of dragon shifters, and if she doesn't produce an heir soon, it could be disastrous for her kingdom. In order to remedy this, her father, the king, has gathered the greatest heroes from across the lands, and set them on a quest to not only save the kingdom, but to win Maya's love. Should they succeed, they will become her husband and rule by her side. Should they fail to win her love, death is the only answer. But with so many dashing men willing to do anything to win her hand, how is a girl to choose? Then again, no one ever said she had to pick just one. After all, the fate of the realm is at stake, and maybe this time, more is merrier. IMPORTANT NOTE: This is NOT a love triangle, what you'll find inside is a reverse harem featuring hot sex, adult themes, dragons, cool weapons, action, adventure, a wise-cracking heroine, and much, MUCH more.

Who knew that computer nerds base their game scenarios n real life universes? Well, clearly the programmers. Like Maya, who is a dragon shifter in her own universe and a game progammer in ours.

There were the usual minor proof reading errors.
I only mention this as Erin’s books tend to have more than most.  I find errors in nearly all books I read even if it just the usual swapping of words for similar spellings like stationary for stationery.  Or the one that my phone annoyed me with this morning. I wrote chesty and it changed it to cherry!

I had one query. When Maya’s – and the other dragons’ wings appear, what happens to their clothes? where are the wings attached to their bodies? some writers give their shifters a magic so that clothes appear and disappear when they shift, but this wasn’t mentioned.

Still nice story and reverse harems are all the rage it seems!

The Auction and the Vampires

Crimson Fold #1

The Hunger Games meets Cinderella. This fairy tale has no happy endings only dark beginnings. They call them the Crimson Fold. High up in their castle they look down on my little world and wield a silent control. That is, until the invitations are sent out. I never dreamed I’d be selected. They tell me it’s a privilege. I should be honored. But the fear in their eyes doesn’t lie. If I refuse to go, my family will be shunned. If I go, my life and my body will no longer be mine. It’ll be theirs. At midnight it will be over. At Midnight I’ll be his.

So Vampires – the Crimson Fold – rule the world – or at least the City State that Clarabelle lives in and each year they have a grand ball where various members of the populace are viewed – rather like a cattle auction. Their looks and capabilities are tested and then they are assigned to their role in the palace – or not. So the ones that look ‘best for breeding’ are given as lovers – or in marriage to the Royalty. The ones not so good are made into servants.

Because this whole Palace choosing so closely resembled the slave/cattle auction I marked it down a little – although it was probably meant to do this.

I liked Clarabelle and do wonder what her Prince has in store for her, but not enough to want to read the follow on book. Sorry. 3.5 stars

Mary Wiles Chronicles #2

For a millennia Mary Wiles played the good guy. Stay on the path and all would be well. But now that she has long strayed from the path to heaven there is nothing stopping her from hunting down those who hurt her and her friends.

Now to save a fellow angel, Mary will have to break all the rules. Unfortunately, that means asking for help from a half-demon she had once called friend.

To find what was lost, Mary will have to help a demon lord cross over to the human plane. But the closer she gets to completing her task the deeper she gets entangled by their lies. Soon, Mary realizes that not even angels can stave off the fires of hell forever.

Are you truthful? Mary can find out.

So Mary is not only a fallen angel but in Hell they cut off her wings. She is now in a permanent quest to find her wings and also her old Captain, Ramiel, who she is convinced was also kidnapped by demons.

In the meantime, using her human form she needs to make a living as she is no longer welcome in Heaven – at least until she can get her wings back and then we shall see.

It turns out Mary is really good at exorcism and divining from people’s auras if they are good or bad and truthful or not. She has thus set up shop with a young assistant as sort of sleuth.

Not the most riveting of tales and as alternate universes go, not exciting.
