Spear of Destiny
Misadventures of Loren #1

Virtuous? Not since…well, none of your business.
The difference between me and the Knights of the Round Table? I make medieval look good.
Loren Van Alst is an independent, twenty-first-century woman, an accused forger, a suspected thief, and the last descendant of Sir Galahad of the Arthurian court. To claim her seat at the Round Table and protect her newly found family of modern-day witches, she’ll need to convince the current Arthur and his knights to let a woman take the knights’ trials. But things go sideways when a crazed wizard goes on the loose with a magical spear that can strip a witch of her powers. As if that weren’t enough, the clique of mean girls from middle school arrives in Camelot and turn out to be witch hunters.
To safeguard a future she never knew she wanted, Loren will have to evade the hunters, defeat the wizard, capture the spear, and pass her trials. No one ever said becoming a kick-ass heroine would be easy!
Urban fantasy goes medieval in this modern day, action-packed, calamitous series of misadventures.
Loren – Nia Rivers’ sidekick has stayed behind in Camelot after they found the Templar Scrolls.
She has her own adventure with her Spear of Destiny and the characters that turn up in the Scrolls book.
And learns what it is to be a Knight of the Round Table – which it turns out she is – hereditarily.
So far so good. I enjoyed this as Loren is a fun character – prone to trouble. But I am worried that her stories will become as formulaic as Nia’s. We shall see.

Nia and Loren go head-to-head with Ancient Greek gods in the next installment of this epic urban fantasy adventure series... Nia Rivers knows that immortality comes at a cost. So when she finds out that the Greek gods have devised a way to offer everlasting life to humans, she heads down to Athens to find out more about the mysterious cult of Demeter. What she doesn't expect to learn about is her own involvement in the rituals. With her bestie, Loren, by her side, Nia must determine if the Olympians are the righteous gods they proclaim to be, or the villians in this chapter of history. The broken heart she's still nursing from Zane's betrayal, and the conflicting feelings she has for Tres, aren't helping. But if Nia can't get her head in the game, the Titans will rise again, and the souls of all humans on Earth will be at risk...
Books 2 and 3 in the Ria stories take us even further into the realm of myth and folk-lore.
It seems that Ria is or at least has been, friends with the Greek Gods of Mount Olympus and King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table (which is now situated in Wales just so you know).
The advantage for the author of this series is that she can get Ria chasing after many mythical objects with many mythical characeters from all of the world’s folklore. The disadvantage for the reader is that the storyline is now basically the same – Ria meets some old friends she has largely forgotten, they need to hunt for a object, they go n a hunt, they encounter lots of problems with baddies, but in the end they find the object.
The same story with different characters. Formulaic. Such a pity. I downgraded the books after reading both to just about a 3. But this is the end of this series for me.
omb Raider meets urban fantasy in this new, spine-tingling adventure series... Meet Nia Rivers: archaeologist, fashionista, and an ancient immortal with a serious memory problem. For the last couple of centuries, Nia has been trying to fill in the blanks of her past by shedding light on history's darkest stories. Her motto: the ugliest stories are the ones that deserve to be told the most. But when a mysterious woman comes forth with a two-thousand year old relic from Nia's past, Nia isn't sure if the story connected to it is one she wants told to the world. Unfortunately, Nia has no choice but to uncover the truth--fast--before a greedy land developer buries the site forever. The fact that he's also an immortal, with a millennia-old grudge against her, doesn't help. Neither do the dark assassins who have been stalking her for centuries, and who've suddenly decided to up their game to end her life. Letting her enemies have their way might be best for Nia, especially when the truth might expose a horrific crime from Nia's past. But all stories deserve to be told. Even the ugliest ones. Even if they say you might be a mass murderer.
Absolutely no Dragons involved in this story but plenty of mythology come to life.
A Dragon Bone is, according to this novel, an ancient artefact with writing on it, usually fund in China. Often a shell and ground up for medecine.
it seems that there are – or were – 12 immortals ‘birthed’, possibly in the Garden of Eden but they are not quite sure. What they are certain of, is that they were born at different times and the oldest is 1 – as numbered on his back in Aramaic/Hebrew script. Nia is number 9.
Nine, aka Nia, Nueve or other variants, is an archaeologist who is several thousand years old, but she is not sure as she forgets. She tells this story in the 1st person as she goes to China to find a Dragon Bone which seems to say something about her ancient history and which she has forgotten. In fact she doesn’t remember ever visiting China in all her years on Earth.
I liked this fantasy story as it starts with a very different premise. The immortals are not Angels, fallen or otherwise. I will be following this series through.
Pumpkin: a Cindermama Story: Volume 1

Single mother Malika “Pumpkin” Tavares lost faith in fairytales after she fell for a toad. Now she believes she’s not cut from the storybook, heroine cloth and searches for Mr. Good Enough amongst the sidekicks and supporting men of the town. Love at first sight isn’t a cliche for town royalty Armand “Manny” Charmayne. For generations the Charmaynes have spotted their soulmates by seeing a golden aura the first time they laid eyes on The One. When Manny meets Pumpkin he sees…nothing, but sparks fly off the richter scale. The more he gets to know her the more he considers defying fate, if only he can convince her to take a chance on love again.
I liked the way the author took the fairytale concept and spun it into a new story. She writes a gently amusing story which is not deep but good for a lazy afternoon in front of the winter fire.
Thus Pumpkin has 2 cousins who are selfish and use her for their own selfish means – small things like using her as a taxi, and failing to show up as a babysitter because they want to do something else.
And Rumpel has the gypsy Sight to help him find talent – which he spins into gold disks. He sees talent as a gold aura and he then can help and assist the person to become better musically.. which of course earns him money. [2nd Book in this series].
I am also all for dress designers who design for the fuller figure as the author is correct in writing what suits runway models doesn’t suit the average woman – especially if you have a fuller figure and only just top 5 foot like me!
So, Go Midori! I’ll buy your clothes!
I am also pleased to say that Ines is a black author writing about black women and thus a welcome addition to my bookshelf.
