Fighting Grannies

were - Fighting Grannies Were we Belong
#5 Shift Happens
Robyn Peterman
Paranormal Romance and Demons
Independently published
(14 Jan. 2019)
four star - Fighting Grannies

I need a new freakin’ job. It’s not what you think. I’m desperate to resign from the Werewolf Treaty Federation aka WTF. Don’t judge. I didn’t name this crew of misfit Shifters so hear me out. After investigating a deadly Jazz Cabbage outbreak, I discover we need a necromancing Demon to help solve the crime. As luck would have it, my gay Vampyre BFF, Dwayne, dated one of these gems several decades ago. Seems all we need to do is summon his evil butt into this plane of existence and poof, crisis solved. The question is, can we bring him back without causing a flesh-eating, end of the world Zombie Apocalypse? With my hunky mate, insane Granny and flamboyant Dwayne by my side, we have no choice but to succeed. If we don’t, the reveal of our existence to the human world is imminent. We are Shifters. Werewolves. WTF. Shift Happens all the time. But this time, we’re making sure only good shift goes down.

As always, Robyn brings humour to her writing and I adore Granny, As an older person myself, I find her an inspiration and her fighting skills amazing! I only wish....
The Council that covers Weres and makes the rules, gets new members and the family, rather surprisingly, acquires new members.

So, in the end, we get a satisfactory, if gruesome ending

Steele by name

(Forged of Steele, Book 13)

three star - Steele by name

Is this playboy ready for the wildest ride of his life? A PR stunt would be good for business so trucking CEO Gannon Steele invites reporter Delphine Ryland to hitch a ride cross-country. But soon the trip turns from strictly business to strictly pleasure, and the consequences might be more than this rough-and-ready bachelor can handle….

Well I thought that these weren’t the first in the series about the Steele family, and checking on Amazon I find that they are books 12 and 13 in the series...
But that in the Kimani imprint (African American novels only) there is a number 89 in the series! So the story goes on...
These 2 novels take on the romances of the 2 youngest of the 6 sons of the family.
Whilst I thought these 2 books were reasonable for their genre, with gentle humour and nice story-telling, I found them rather short. But then if Brenda is turning out the numbers of books she is, she can’t write a longer length novel each time. And it may also be the norm for this imprint.
This left me wanting more depth from the characters and the stories.
Adequate but not exceptional.

Meddling Mamas

allyouneed - Meddling Mamas All You Need is a Duke
Duke Hunters Club #1
Bianca Blythe
Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op
four star - Meddling Mamas

When Margaret Carberry’s mother drags her upstairs at a ball, Margaret does not expect her mother to tie her to the bed and lock the door. Unfortunately, Margaret’s mother has taken it upon herself to declare Margaret compromised—whether or not Margaret wants to resort to such tactics to snare a husband. Jasper Tierney, the Duke of Jevington, is surprised to encounter a half-clothed woman sprawled upon his bed. He is even more shocked to discover her identity. Margaret Carberry is renowned as an incorrigible wallflower, not a seductress, no matter how appealing her bare flesh is against his bedding. When Margaret declares she won’t go along with her mother’s scheme and will find a husband on her own, Jasper vows to assist her, lest Margaret’s mother concoct another method to arrange a compromising situation. Jasper is certain of one thing: he has no desire to marry. As Jasper works to match Margaret to a fellow duke, the prospect of a forced marriage with her lacks its earlier loathsomeness. Perhaps he missed his chance for true bliss.

This was a really fun book to read – the combination of a wallflower and an incredibly determined mother who wants to climb the social ranks with a Duke for her daughter gives lots of great humorous moments in this story.

Margaret is a lot more courageous than she originally thought and jumping of of the window – well..

I like this series start and will certainly read more of them. The houseparty was a good idea too even though it didn’t really work for the Duke in the way he wanted it to. But this means we have several more Dukes to find out about their romances and have been introduced to them in preparation for the rest of the series..

Eigth Hell Island Adventure

hell - Eigth Hell Island Adventure The Eighth Hell
Sisters of the Storm #3
by Guy Estes
Sci Fi & Fantasy
BooksGoSocial
Pub Date 8 May 2018
Kindle
three star - Eigth Hell Island Adventure

The most dangerous women in the world dare the most dangerous place in the world.

The Shingora, a place known and dreaded by all, the name driving those who hear it to mutter prayers and make signs for protection. None who have gone to that island ever came back… until now.

The trade guilds sent an expedition there, hoping to find a wellspring of natural resources. Only one man returned, his experience having reduced him to gibbering madness. Now the guilds are sending a new expedition, three hundred strong and armed for war, to learn the fate of the previous one and rescue the survivors… if there are any.

Joining them are the Chosen sisters: Aleena Kurrin, the Battle Queen, gifted by the gods in war, and Baezha Ambrose, the Witch Queen, gifted by the gods in magic. Sworn to recover any survivors, they are joined by a host of new friends and brave an island teeming with bizarre creatures. And on the Shingora, everything kills.

Yet an even darker discovery awaits them in the Shingora’s depths, an unnatural horror far worse than anything the island’s sinister reputation ever hinted at. And while immersed in all the island’s perils, a traitor threatens the company from within. With treacherous enemies at their backs and engulfed by a horde of abominations, the sisters will be tested as they’ve never been tested before… and even those Chosen by the gods have their breaking point.

Though listed as book 3 in a series, this is a stand-alone novel.

A Boys Own Adventure to the centre of the World-of the 8th Hell-or the Island Shingora- from whence no-one ever returns.

The author had bags of fun here creating monsters, or he has seriously bad nightmares and this was his therapy_ to write a story that included the worst. And showed off his knowledge of obscure weaponry too.

Ok- Maybe it’s a Girls Own Adventure as most of the men come off really badly in this story. And the women do very well indeed and are not only Amazons, but also the True Chosen [sisters] of the Gods Allena and Baezha, and who are very heroic.

The nasties didn’t frighten me but it’s probably not a good read for those of a timid disposition.

Unfortunately there were quite a few proofreading errors, but all small and thus didn’t impact too much.

Was it good writing? Well maybe-

Was it well told? Maybe.

Would I recommend it? Depends on reader.

Would I read more? No.

A Romeo and Juliet novel

Calypso - A Romeo and Juliet novel Calypso
(Eleri Royals, #1)
Ebony Olson
Genres: Adult, Romance, Suspense
EbandMuse Publications
(February 14, 2020)
three star - A Romeo and Juliet novel

In my town, there are two kinds of people; those from the sophisticated Eleri, and those from the gang-run Riverside.
The natural divide is the Eleri River.

The human divide is money.

A town that doesn’t really exist but operates very much in the old medieval way where there is those with money on one side of a river, and those without on the other.  In some American towns it is also a railway line I understand. In England it would be the higher lane for the wealthy as the lower land would be marshy and prone to flooding.  And many would have the name Upper Town added.

Just for a change we have a female billionaire but we still have her falling for someone from the ‘wrong side of the tracks’ – see reference to railways here.

I was rather concerned with our heroine’s cousin – Kingsley. He was far too close to her for comfort. But what a family she has – and Kingsley too. Too much money and not enough character to be anything other than drags

A reasonably well written novel with some suspense and romance, but not exceptional.  It is a Romeo and Juliet without the  final deaths.
