Enter the city and lose yourself

City on Fire

Garth Risk Hallberg

This is New York in 1975. Go there and escape the small town dullness and suffocation and head for the bright lights where you can be yourself, find yourself, or be true to yourself.

In this book, this means, admit to everyone that you are homosexual.

This should have been a good story but I found it very slow and by 25% of the way through it seemed to have progressed very little.

I therefore gave up.

I give this 1 star as it just couldn’t hold my attention. I did try twice to read it though…

The Ivory Staff’s author is revealed

Questions for Authors:

  1. Can you tell your readers something about why you chose this particular topic to write about? What appealed to you about it? Why do you think it is different and your approach is unique?

Whether in my music or in my writing, I like to center around the topic of perseverance and overcoming odds despite extreme obstacles.  As a legally blind artsy fartsy, every rung on the ladder of life has been great, but it’s definitely been a struggle, hence, my affinity for sharing stories of grit.  While writing the novel, I spent several months in Europe and visited Africa a couple of times. These trips helped set the feudalistic Arab-African scene setting of the tale mixed in with some culture and folklore.  The topic of the struggling class standing up to the regal class is an ageless one; however, in The Ivory Staff, it is tackled in the fashion of an engaging whimseyed fairy-tale.

  1. How long do you think about a topic before deciding to write about it? Do you have a set of notes or a note book where you write down topics that appeal before making a decision as to which topic this time?

Sometimes I do write down topics, so yes, I do have a virtual scratch pad of notes. Nonetheless, more often than not some stories (especially short stories) just come to you and flow out in the moment.

  1. How long does it take to research a topic before you write? And for this book?

Being that this book is based on an age-old maxim set in Fantasy, the research I conducted revolved around Feudal culture and African culture and folklore. Most of that research was conducted during my stay in both places as I wrote.

  1. How helpful do you find authority figures such as the police when you say you want to write about them? Is there a good way to approach them in your experience?

In this next book I’m writing, I have been approaching authority figures and experts in fields I love but know little about. I’ve learned that dependant on who and how you approach and ask, experts are highly inclined to share their generally knowledge for the sake of a good novel or non-fiction.

  1. How many times have you been rejected before your first novel was accepted or before this book was accepted?

I spent a year trying to find a literary agent to no avail. I then went directly to traditional publishers and was picked up after a couple of months.

  1. Did you need to self-publish on e-books before a publisher took you up?

No.  Many of the trade publishers I’d spoken with preferred that I hadn’t.

  1. Would you recommend self-publishing and building an audience before approaching a publisher? If so, what benefits do you see that it might have for the aspiring novelist?

I believe that Hybrid publishing may be a good solution for a serial novelist if they’re having trouble landing an agent or publisher. It encompasses the best of both worlds, does not have the self-published stigma, yet also allows the writer a healthy amount of control.

  1. Does writing provide sufficient income to live on? And how long did it take before this happened?

Currently I don’t only write novels, but also song write, compose, score and design.  I’d love to make /rake in a higher income with my writing; however, even if I did, I don’t believe I would stop composing and song writing.

  1. What is the funniest thing that happened to you on a book tour?

A couple purchased a book and told me to sign the book to both of them.  Later during the event, I found they’d just met at the event!

Billionaires need love too

Love Dies Hard
C.C. Cartwright
(Billionaire Romance #1 (Includes Bonus of Love Dies Hard 2))
Publication date: May 17th 2015
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult, Romance

My name is Marcus Hunter. I own Hunter Investments, a billion dollar hedge fund.

I admit it, I’m a total womanizer. A player, a serial-seducer, call me what you like.

I enjoy a variety of women and I don’t do love.

I work hard, and I play even harder.

I rarely dip into the office pool. That was until I became intrigued with Sophie Shawn. She is a high-flying money manager like myself and we’ve had to work closely together.

Sophie’s my equal, she’s smart, sharp-witted and of course she has to be sexy-as-hell.

The way she shakes her little ass in her tight, short skirts has me wanting to bury myself deep inside her.

We’re enjoying a drink together after work.

She doesn’t know it yet, but I’m going to bed her tonight. I want to hear her beneath me begging for more. When I’m done with her she won’t be able to utter a single coherent word.

Little did I know, I would be the one in for a surprise from Miss Sophie Shawn.

3book bookfour Couple indoors

We’re sitting at the bar in the restaurant downstairs from the offices of Hunter Investments. Sophie and I have put in long hours this week and we need to unwind. I can think of the perfect way to unwind and she’s sitting right next to me looking oh-so-damn sexy. Her dress slits open in the front and I think I catch a glimpse of, what is that, a garter and stockings?
I’m in trouble; she catches me looking.
“Like what you see, Marcus?” she says, as the words roll off those luscious red lips of hers.
“I do. I do indeed,” I say, as my eyes cast down to her breasts straining against the fabric of her low cut dress.
She lets out a soft laugh as she takes a sip of her wine.
“Have dinner with me,” I tell her.
“Alright,” she accepts my invitation.
“What are you in the mood for?” I ask.
“You,” she replies, and I’m not sure I heard her right.
“Excuse me?” I ask.
“You heard me,” she says, staring at me seductively.
Sophie is getting me so hot; I have to loosen my tie.
“Let’s eat first,” I say with a wicked smile.
“Suit yourself. You choose the place,” Sophie says.
“Let’s eat here,” I suggest.
“Sounds good,” she says, leaning into me as she slides off her bar stool and spreads her legs to make sure I can see up her skirt. Her silky dress pulls tightly across her breasts. Maybe we should skip dinner…
Once we close the door to her luxurious apartment and she puts her things down, she starts walking into her bedroom while she’s unbuttoning the front of her dress and sliding off its belt.
My feet are rooted in place as she leaves me standing in the entryway of her lavishly decorated apartment and I’m not sure what to make of this.
“Get in here,” she calls out to me from her bedroom.
Just like that, no foreplay? Damn, she’s throwing me off my game big time; she almost makes me nervous.
I walk slowly towards her room and she’s sprawled out sexily on her king size bed in the most alluring black lace lingerie. My heart stops. All she is wearing now is a black lace bra that she fills out nicely, then my eyes travel down to her shapely waistline where I see her black lace garter belt that looks amazing on her curves. Next, I see her black lace panties and sheer black stockings covering her long, lean legs, down to the tips of her toes.
She’s posed like a pin-up, and she looks so sexy. I immediately rise to the occasion.
“Strip,” she commands as she rolls over to turn on her iPod player.
I do as I’m told; this girl is stealing all of my lines.
I strip down to my tight black briefs and climb on top of her, then my lips crash down onto those ruby red lips of hers that I can’t wait to have wrapped around me.

Author Bio:

My passions lie in reading and writing sexy contemporary romance novels. I love writing in the genre I love to read. Personal experiences are often the inspiration for my sexy romances, so you will find a little bit of me in every story I pen. I will leave you to guess which parts are true and which parts are fiction!

Listening to my favorite music while writing inspires me to create my characters and makes their love stories come alive. I believe in writing about heroines who are strong, smart, sassy, sexy and have a sense of humor.

I cherish my family and am a hopeless romantic. I believe in finding your happily-ever-after and that each day is for living, loving and laughing.

Adding up the Inconsistencies

 LaCour’s Destiny

By Robert Downs

A NetGalley Review

She is an accountant with a penchant for finding trouble in the accounts she audits. She tries hard but unfortunately for her, she has many of the traits the majority expect an accountant to have – she is nerdy, she is not fashionable, she does not have a great sense of humour, she rarely dates and even then her dates don’t go well.

But she does have much more admirable traits for a human being. She is dogged, determined and once she sets out to do something she doesn’t stop until she has completed the task. Our heroine is persistent and so she ends up with rather more trouble than she anticipated when she started investigated some figures that didn’t ‘add up’ right.

She is very precise and everything is detailed down to the last item and this book shows you exactly what type of person she is.

She has one fault though – she eats Jolly Rogers – especially when concentrating or nervous.

Now what on earth are Jolly Rogers?

I made a wild guess that, as they could go in her pocket and had wrappers that they were sweets of some kind – candies if you will and sure enough Wikipedia tells me:

They are sweet, somewhat tangy or sour hard candy, gummies, fruit chews, jelly beans, and lollipops. First produced in 1949.

jolly rogers

I enjoyed this being written in the first person as it really made our heroine come to life in the somewhat stilted style of writing which clearly echoed the way her mind worked. In fact I felt she was talking to me rather than my reading her story. I could hear her voice in my head. So kudos to the writer.

A 5 star novel
