A special type of fire: Author tells…

AngelfireTourBanner2 - A special type of fire: Author tells...

Interview – Christina Bauer, Author for the launch of Angelfire

  1. What is the funniest thing that happened to you on a book tour?
My old boyfriend came in to buy a book, so I hid in the bathroom until he left. Girl power!

  2. Or what is the funniest thing that has happened to you when writing / researching a book?
I do my own voices while I’m writing. One time in Starbucks, I did a scary voice and some guy dropped his latte. It inspired me to record my books as audiobooks.

  3. What do you read when you are ill in bed?
This book called Faeries that I first read as a teen. Always cheers me up.

  4. What is your favourite genre?
    Paranormal fantasy romance.

  5. If you could recommend a living author – who would it be? A dead author?
JRR Tolkien. He’s only dead in theory, though.

  6. Which author had the most influence on your writing? Your writing style? Your writing genre?
    Also JRR Tolkien.

  7. In your opinion who is the funniest author now writing?
    I’m going with me here.

  8. Do you have any pets?
    Yes!
    1. If so, what are they?
      I have a golden retriever
    1. And what are they called?
      Ruby
    1. Do they help you write? Eg our cats like to sit on my desk/computer and play with my mouse.
Ruby hangs out nearby and provides moral support.
    1. What is the funniest thing they have done while you are writing?
      Ruby ate a bee once.

There you have it, my interview for the launch of Angelfire! Thanks so much for having me stop by and I hope to see you on a future tour!

Let’s have a fight: Book Review

MackTourBanner 1 e1632325037645 - Let's have a fight: Book Review
Whilst I really like this series, I just wish that the books were longer.

As the series has developed the books have become shorter, and whilst I realise that they were originally (perhaps) and certainly now, aimed at a much younger audience, and the concept is that they don’t like to read long stories, I would take issue with that. After all, Harry Potter books are long. And 12 year olds and younger read them. So why assume the stories need to be short – and thus missing a great deal of possible character and storyline development.

And this is where I think this book lacks something.

The characters have been established, and the drawings are stunning so you can imagine the characters in their full glory – though I do think the costume on our heroine lacks a bit – of material – to protect her skin. Despite the dragon scales, it would  be nice for more leather on her legs surely?

But the end of the story seems a bit like -with one leap they were free’. As though Christine couldn’t think of what to say. Perhaps the series has run out of steam?  I shall read to the end of the series, just because, but I am not giving 5, nor even 4 for this series now, it is down to 3 and if I hadn’t been a loyal reader …

Sorry Christine. But I can give you a star for the artwork.

And the Clocks: Author explains Igni

ClockworkIgniTourBanner - And the Clocks: Author explains Igni

Our Author Says:

  • Did you need to self-publish on e-books before a publisher took you up?
I don’t see traditional publishing as a real goal for myself anymore. I know how to make a living as-is… That’s a big deal and I don’t want to screw with it 🙂
  • Does writing provide sufficient income to live on? And how long did it take before this happened?
There’s a Facebook group called 20 Books to 50K which has a lot of detail on this. They’re like an online support system! I don’t use this model, but I’m currently self-sufficient at about 40 books.
  • What is the funniest thing that happened to you on a book tour?
I brought along costumed characters from my book and had them talk up shoppers. Fun! See pic below.
  • Which author had the most influence on your writing? Your writing style? Your writing genre?
The answer to all three: JRR Tolkien!
  • In your opinion who is the funniest author now writing?
Can I list myself? Oops, I just did.

Rise Up! Author interview

HuntressTourBanner 1 - Rise Up! Author interview

Can you tell your readers something about why you chose this particular topic to write about?

Right now, I am happily touring the blogosphere as part of the launch for HUNTRESS, book #7 in my Angelbound Offspring series. I got the idea for this novel after reading some omegaverse stuff. In the omegaverse world, there’s more structure about being a fated mate versus just—BLAM—I love you! So I found that intriguing. That said, the omegaverse is pretty explicit, so I needed to ditch the concept and rebuild it from scratch so it’s appropriate for a younger reader.

What appealed to you about writing HUNTRESS?

I’m a big fan of characters discovering their worlds alongside the reader. In HUNTRESS, our heroine has a memory block in terms of what it really means for her to be a glass dragon. We get to join her as she finds herself again… literally.

Why do you think it is different and your approach is unique
True story: I recently asked my readers this question so I find the right key words for my book descriptions. The biggest thing readers found different about my work is my unique approach to epic fantasy. I craft different worlds for each of my books. So if you want to lose yourself in another reality, then I’m your author!

How long do you think about a topic before deciding to write about it?
I map things out, come back, and tweak them again. Wash, rinse, repeat. From the start of the process, it’s probably at least three years. By the time I get down to intensively writing, it can be 6-8 weeks.

Do you have a set of notes or a note book where you write down topics that appeal before making a decision as to which topic this time?
I use Pinterest a ton. You can
check out my boards here.

How long does it take to research a topic before you write?
As a fantasy writer, I don’t research so much go through a process of trial and error. Example: in my book, HUNTRESS, I originally wanted the character of Gage to have his dead parents talking in his head. It made for a few funny scenes—and the idea certainly isn’t out there a ton—but in the end, it just didn’t work for the character. So I ripped it out and did something else. This goes on and on until at some point, I read the draft and say, that’s it!!!

Thanks for having me by as part of the launch tour for HUNTRESS!

Who would use this bone?

A continuation of the story of Mila and Lincoln and how their partnership develops.

The Viking Games – a small slice of the Viking world and gods had somehow found its way into a pocket which belonged only to itself, but that Lincoln’s father wanted to have access to for trade reasons. So he sent Lincoln out.

Lincoln found out that there was a trick being played in the arena….

In some ways this was an interesting difference in the story especially when you found out how the trick was being played, but it was a little too full of blood and gore for me. I like a good fight but this was a bit too much. And there wasn’t enough ‘Viking’ for me as they have such interesting gods if you poke into them.

I am beginning to feel ennui from the author. Here is a computer game but in book form. She has copied the concept and written it up rather than being entirely original.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

AB Christina Bauer pic - Who would use this bone?

Christina Bauer knows how to tell stories about kick-ass women. In her best selling Angelbound series, the heroine is a part-demon girl who loves to fight in Purgatory’s Arena and falls in love with a part-angel prince. This young adult best seller has driven more than 500,000 ebook downloads and 9,000 reviews on Goodreads and retailers. The first three books in the series are now available as audiobooks on Audible and iTunes.

Bauer has also told the story of the Women’s March on Washington by leading PR efforts for the Massachusetts Chapter. Her pre-event press release—the only one sent out on a major wire service—resulted in more than 19,000 global impressions and redistribution by over 350 different media entities including the Associated Press.

Christina graduated from Syracuse University’s Newhouse School with BA’s in English along with Television, Radio, and Film Production. She lives in Newton, MA with her husband, son, and semi-insane golden retriever, Ruby.
