Bossy Grump: Excerpt

When I wake up in the morning, the first thing I do is check my email.

I’m expecting Miss One Glass to send back some whiny message about how unfair it was for me to bury her under an avalanche of projects.

There’s nothing like that, but a slideshow of the final bid in its current form attached to a blank email with the subject line Done.

Damn her.

It’s incredible how she maintains her scathing sass with a single word.

At the office, Nick stands in front of Miss Holly’s desk, sipping his sugar rush mocha and leering over her. Probably trying to look down her shirt.

Careful, you idiot. This girl knows Illinois employment law by heart. She’ll have your balls stapled to your jacket.

Muttering silently, I stop on the way to my office and my eyes meet hers. “I take it my coffee’s waiting on my desk?”

She looks up and glares a second too long, those green eyes glittering like a jungle cat’s.

“Nope.”

“No?” I spit back.

“Shocking espresso shortage. The Bean Bar only had enough left for a mocha and one double shot, and Mrs. Beatrice Nightingale Brandt takes seniority. If I’d waited for them to resupply, I’d have missed your oh-so-important deadline. Mrs. Brandt told me to let you know you could see her if you had a problem with it, though.” She flashes me a murderously triumphant “gotcha” grin.

“The Bean Bar does not run out of espresso,” I snarl through clenched teeth. The coffee shop has its shit together better than anything else in this city—the whole reason we love it and treat ourselves to Chicago’s finest dressed-up caffeine overload a few times every week.

“Sorry. We’re one cuppa joe short, but I figured the project was more important, so…” Holly just smiles and shrugs like a schoolgirl who’s gotten away with cherry-bombing a high school toilet.

The motion sends my eyes lashing down her face to the low cut of her blouse.

For a tortured second, I’m no better than my idiot brother, my eyes glued to a pair of ample tits I’d like to boss around with my tongue, my teeth, my—

Damn her to the moon.

With nothing else to say, I turn around and nearly slam into Nick.

“Whoa, where’s the fire?” He greets me with his usual lopsided grin.

“Nowhere, apparently.” I level a glare on him. “Shouldn’t you be in your office working?

He holds a hand up. “Bro, if you’re jonesing that bad for coffee, I can run down to the bar downstairs and get you an espresso. My treat.”

“That won’t be necessary.”

I need to move it before my humiliation is complete, so I push past him, go to my office, and slam the door shut. Then I remember, I’ve only seen one completed project this morning.

Where’s the other?

I open the frosted glass door and stick my head out. “Where’s the Winthrope comp catalog?”

Miss Holly looks up, twirling her blond hair like spun gold. “I’m working on it now! I can send you what I have. The final should be ready before lunch.” She points to her computer.

My eyes narrow and I fold my arms.

“It was due at eight a.m.”

Nick watches us for a minute and huffs loudly. “Yo, Ward, give her a break. It’s still her first week.”

“No excuse to miss deadlines. She has the credentials and work ethic, when she applies them,” I say.

“Aw, c’mon, the last girl took at least a solid week to make those catalogs,” Nick fires back. “There’s so much crap in them—”

Miss Holly jumps in. “Most of it I’ve been able to copy and paste, which is why I’m done with the North American hotels for comparison. Since Mr. Winthrope is coming by for a check-in this week, I thought the slideshow was more important. I’ll be done with the catalog today, like I said.”

Nick’s eyes trace from Paige—Miss Holly—to me.

Get her the hell out of your head, I demand inwardly. Yes, she’s beautiful, but she’s a wine-sloshing trouble maker with a whip for a tongue. Stop feeding her.

Wickedly we… Book Blitz

Something Wicked
Lockhart Legacy, #1
Emery Nicolson
Adult, Paranormal, Romance, Urban Fantasy
March 1st 2021

Something wicked this way comes…

You’d think being the descendant of powerful witches would grant me the power to sort out my life, right? But you’d be wrong. I’m stuck in a rut, disdained by my family, and my romantic life is a disaster. Oh, and did I forget to mention that I have no magic?

When a cursed heirloom is stolen, I should stay out of it and leave the retrieval to those better equipped but everything seems to lead back to me…

With the help of an enigmatic bounty hunter, I may be able to clear my name and retrieve the artefact before death and chaos are unleashed upon my beloved city but doing so could cost me everything — including my life.

Excerpt

My apartment is not too far from the family offices, below which the brig is located, but Rhea’s uncharacteristic kindness seems to be holding and rather than march me through the city she calls a cab to transport me to jail which I am immeasurably grateful for given the circumstances.

The cab drops us outside the tour offices and Rhea quickly hops out, dragging my case with her, as I follow her at a much more sedate pace being in no hurry to go to jail and even less of a hurry to put weight on my feet again. To my surprise, Rhea heads for the tour office and not the brig which is a little bit further down the hill.

“We’re going through the office?” I ask, as she unlocks the door and gestures for me to enter.

She rolls her eyes at me. “Delays the scandal this way.”

I snort, for of course it does.

I had barely hobbled two steps into the dimly lit space when a furious screech echoes throughout the room. “COLM WALKER! Really Millie? Have you lost your goddamn mind!”

“Hello to you too mum.”

“Don’t take that tone with me! What were you thinking? Colm Walker! How could you do this? How could you get involved with that – that man!”

Fury simmers through me at her words. I knew when I went home with Colm that it would not be well received by the family – and that was before The Widow’s Ruby was stolen – but her lack of priorities is shocking. Not to mention that I am a grown woman! My family have no right to try and dictate who I date, fuck, or spend time with!

“Calm down mum,” Rhea interjects, before I can open my mouth and rile my mother up even more. Unfortunately, listening has never been my mother’s strong suit, so she continues ranting.

“Calm down? Calm down! You cannot be serious?” My mother points a furious finger at me. “She’s involved with a felon! A Walker no less, and you expect me to calm down?”

I’m curious when Rhea rubs her forehead looking utterly exasperated, with our mother, and not me, for a change. She looks like she’s praying for patience when she chides, “We don’t know that mum.”

Yep, something is definitely wrong with Rhea. She is never nice to me. She is typically the chairman of the ‘let us beat up on Millie’ committee, and she is an epic parental kiss ass, yet this is the second time in twenty-four hours she’s stood somewhat with me. It is unnatural. I suppose if us supernaturals exist, then it is perfectly logical that aliens do too and, in that case, I fear my sister has been swapped out for a pod person. At the very least she has had something knocked loose by thorough probing; there’s really no other explanation for her sudden humanity.

Immortal Biker? Book Blitz

Cutter’s Mission
(Valhalla Warriors, #1)
by Rosie Jarvis
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance
Publication date: February 9th 2021

An Immortal Biker Daddy walks into a bar…

Abbott McClain is on the run.

An infamous human trafficker and murderer is hot on his heels, and he has nowhere to go. When his car breaks down in a small Texas town, he has no choice but to seek help from a biker bar in the middle of nowhere. After a lifetime of rejection, he doesn’t want to trust anyone ever again. But when he meets a blue-eyed bear at the bar who promises him kindness and protection, he desperately wants to believe that this time things will be different.

James Alan Cutter is on a mission.

As a member of an immortal motorcycle club entrusted with protecting humanity, he shouldn’t be taking time off for romance. But something about Abbott stirs his Daddy nature.

When evil stalks the boy Cutter has fallen for, his brothers in arms come together to protect their love.

Cutter’s Mission is a 48K motorcycle club romance with an age gap, size difference, and hurt/comfort.

Excerpt

He really had no choice. The sun would be down soon, and that would make this entire situation a million times worse. Being broken down in a strange place in the dark? That was a horror movie plot. Rom-coms were more of Abbott’s style anyway. Okay, cute twink meets big sexy biker, they fall in love and live happily ever after. Abbott snorted. Yeah, right.

Abbott nearly tripped over the step leading from the gravel lot to the small, covered porch. It seemed almost funny that a backwoods biker club would have a porch. Abbott let his imagination run wild, just to get his mind off the impending danger of the unknown.

Maybe they held wine tastings on Wednesdays and talked about planting flowers around the building to soften the harsh lines. Did they serve Brie with crackers and a nice Chardonnay? Did they discuss the newest designs on leather jackets and where to find the best tailor for the perfect fit? Was that even a thing? The humorous thoughts helped calm Abbott’s nerves. His hand was barely shaking when he reached for the door handle.

It took a moment for his eyes to adjust to the darker interior. The music was lively and loud, and the unmistakable sounds of a pool game was overlaid with raucous laughter. Not too different than some of the gay bars he had gone to before.

This place would be a leather-Daddy-loving boy’s dream! Abbott loved men, all men, but big, furry bears were his weakness. Now, to be honest, Leather Daddies had just become a new deposit in his spank bank. And they were everywhere. Don’t get a boner now! They’ll kill you and you’ll never be found.

Abbott glanced up, spotting a gorgeous man sitting at the end of the bar. He was drinking beer from a mug the size of a pitcher. Dark, close-cropped hair and five o’clock shadow brought out his deep blue eyes which were staring directly at him. Abbott licked his lips, trying to get the courage to move but his body was completely frozen to the spot. He took in the dark tattoos that covered the sexy bear’s arms and shivered.

“You lost, boy?” A stern voice grabbed Abbott’s attention and the ring of authority shook him from his stupor. He quickly moved toward the bar, switching his focus from the blue-eyed biker to the speaker. Not dressed like the patrons, Abbott assumed he was the owner. No denim or leather vest on this guy, but an ill-fitting blue t-shirt, stained half-apron, and a face that was currently sporting a frown. Perhaps this was Clancy?

“Yes, well, no. I mean, I, I’m not sure?” Abbott swallowed with an audible click. He realized the music had stopped, and the place was completely silent.

“Is that a question?” The gruff server placed his hands on the bar as he studied Abbott. He was clean-shaven, had steel gray hair long enough to touch his collar, a sun-worn face covered in wrinkles, and hazel eyes that traveled over Abbott’s body. If Abbott squinted, the bartender could look like Sam Elliott. Only not as cute, and without the bushy mustache.

“Well, to be honest, I’m not really lost. I’m just not sure where I am.” He shook his head to stop his nervous rambling. “Sorry, I was on the main road when my car just died. It’s a junker anyway, but it’s my only transportation. I walked by here once already looking for a place to let me use the phone. To call for a tow. Or something.”

No one in the building said a word. The pool games had stopped. Abbott gulped as he looked around. Men and women were standing stock still, even the band were holding their instruments, watching the scene. Every person in the bar had on jeans, a leather jacket, or a vest, including the hottie drinking a pitcher of beer at the bar.

“S-so, is there a phone I can use to call a tow truck? My cell doesn’t get service around h-here and it’s, uh, dead anyway.” He held up the offending cheap burner phone before sliding it into his pocket. He had just informed a bunch of strangers, who could be homophobic, that he was alone and without communication. He could really use that guardian angel right now.

The bartender shook his head, his eyes never leaving Abbott’s face. “No phone here. Cutter? You able to help this kid out?”

“Cuh – Cutter?” Well, things just shifted from the Rom-Com Abbott had imagined into the horror movie he feared. The name was intimidating. But then again, so was every single large, leather-clad person in the bar. Any one of them could squash Abbott like a bug.

Best but not: Book Blitz

The Best Man Genres:
(From Connemara With Love #1)
by Alex Kelly
Adult, Contemporary, Romance
Publication date: November 12th 2020

I always turn up at just the wrong moment. I never know how to make the most of a situation; I don’t know the right thing to say, or when I should come or go.⁣ Let’s just say I have really shit timing.⁣ I’m not a smart guy. I don’t have great ideas.⁣ I’m practical, a hard worker; someone who lives for his family, and for the air that she breathes.⁣ It’s just a shame that the “she” in question never knew this. It’s a shame that I waited all these years to make my move. It’s useless to tell you, readers, that it was already too late; that I’d screwed everything up, once again. And, this time, my mistakes forced her to come home.⁣ Except she didn’t want to stay.⁣ And now she hates me – or maybe she doesn’t. I still haven’t worked out what’s going on between us, but like I said, I’m not the sharpest tool in the box. And even though this could be my last chance, I’m not going to be the one to ask her to stay. Not even if she turns out to be the one I’ve always waited for.⁣ Because she doesn’t belong in this place.⁣ And she doesn’t belong in my life.⁣ My name is Alex Brennan, and this is my story: of how I realised I’d lost the most important person in my life, before I even had her.⁣

The Best Man by @askellywrites is a great contemporary romance and you can get it FREE on #KindleUnlimited! https://amzn.to/3aDhE6Y⁣

⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣Excerpt

I walk behind her wordlessly, until we get to the door of her building. I’m a gentleman, and she knows it. I’ve always walked her to her door – something her brothers have always taken the piss out of me for – because I want to be sure that she gets home okay, and that nothing happens to her. I don’t do it now because of everything that’s just happened; I’ve always done it, and I always will. I’m not ashamed of that. If there’s one thing my mother taught me, it’s that I should never be ashamed of who I am and what I feel, and I’m not going to start feeling shameful tonight. So I walk up to the top floor with her without being asked why. Once we get to her front door, Ellie sticks her key into the lock and opens it, then stands, unmoving, with her forehead against the wood, trying to work out what should happen next.

“Don’t ask me,” I say, helping her.

Ellie turns slowly to face me.

“Now’s not the right moment,” I say, because it’s true. Even though the only thing I want right now is to push her inside, lock us into her apartment, and make love to her until we can’t walk anymore.

She smiles and nods; she knows this is for the best, too. I step closer to her and stroke her face, before gently pressing my lips to hers. Then I say it, because I can feel her fear pulsing into my chest.

“I’ll never ask you, Ellie.”

I’m an idiot, but I carry on anyway, because I love her more than I love the idea of the two of us together.

“I’ll never ask you to come back.”

I let go of her face and take a few steps back.

“Why not?”

“You know why,” I say; and from the way her eyes grow wide, I realise that she already knew my answer all along.

Jenny Hartwell

Entangled Embrace
Publication date: February 8th 2021

The only thing tempering their insta-hate is delicious attraction.

Sunny chocolatier Charlotte Beecher is unemployed, in student debt, and on the verge of hawking her beloved copper pots just to make ends meet. So when a gourmet chocolate factory chooses her as one of five candidates to help re-launch the company in their Charlie and the Chocolate Factory inspired competition, Charlotte begins to see a light at the end of the tunnel.

Fellow contestant Luke Wells complicates her plans to win by a landslide with his flow charts and marketing projections. Mr. Tall, Dark, and Haughty is all about the bottom line and is as bitter as she is sweet. And when he snubs Charlotte in the first challenge, misunderstanding or not, she transforms from cream puff to jawbreaker. Bring. It. On.

But when these two rivals find themselves distracted by delicious attraction, will they let their passion get in the way of winning the competition?

Tour Excerpts – My Sweet Enemy by Jenny Hartwell

Excerpt

She opened the door and stepped inside.

“Oh!” She started at the sight of another person inside the fridge, and her foot rammed into something on the floor. “What are you—” she began to ask.

The other person turned. “The door!” Luke shouted. Charlotte gasped and pivoted, pushing out with her empty hand to stop the door from closing, but she was too late. It closed with a heavy clank.

She glanced down, and in the dim light inside the cooler, she saw a brick near the door. It must have been propping it open while he was in here, and she’d accidentally kicked it out of the way.

She set her chocolate molds on a shelf and pushed on the door handle. It didn’t budge.

“Damn it,” Luke growled, striding across the small space. He rattled the handle, but the door didn’t open for him either.

Crap. “We’re locked in,” she said.

He nodded.

“Inside an industrial refrigerator.”

He nodded again.

“The two of us.”

Luke slowly pivoted to face her. “Did you do this on purpose?” he asked, his voice hard.

“What?” Charlotte stared at him. “Are you freaking kidding me?” She shivered. It was damn cold in here, and about to get colder.

“No, are you freaking kidding me?” he retorted, leaning toward her. In the dim light, his eyes glittered with barely suppressed fury.

Charlotte shivered again. “Of course I didn’t do it on purpose,” she shouted. “If I wanted to trap you in an icebox of death, don’t you think I’d make sure I was on the other side of the door?”

She glared, and their eyes dueled for what seemed like an eternity. Charlotte’s neck began to protest her sustained glare with someone a foot taller, so she dropped her eyes and stepped back. Shivering, she wrapped her arms around herself. She’d left her light jacket in the interns’ office and didn’t even have the extra protection of her apron, since that was sitting at her workstation in the main part of the kitchen.

Damn, it was wickedly cold in there.

Luke banged on the door with his fist and hollered. They both waited in silence to see if anyone would come. Aside from the whir of the fridge’s motor, there was no sound.

“They’re all downstairs, eating lunch,” Charlotte murmured. It was unlikely anyone would be back in the kitchen for an hour since Simone had told them to take their time after working so hard during the morning session.

“Damn,” Luke said, still facing the door. His breath puffed out in a cloud. It had grown even colder once the temperature stabilized with the door shut.

Charlotte’s teeth began to chatter. “I’m s-sorry.”

He turned around.

“I d-didn’t realize about the b-brick,” she added. Damn, it was painfully cold. Her fingertips were growing numb.

His eyes scanned her body. “We could freeze to death.” He sounded almost clinical, but she shivered in response to the heated look in his eyes anyway. A shiver on top of a shiver. God, she was pathetic.

“W-what do we do?” she asked. “Jog in p-place?”

They both trotted where they stood. Luke rubbed his hands together. Charlotte tucked hers under her arms. Their breaths came out in white puffs.

“It’s not enough,” he said grimly after a moment. “I think there’s only one option.”

“You’ll s-sacrifice yourself so I c-can pull a Luke Skywalker and climb inside your steaming abdominal cavity?”

He narrowed his eyes.

She shrugged with a whatcha-gonna-do expression. If you couldn’t make Star Wars jokes as you were literally freezing to death, when could you?

He took a step closer, his arms opening.

Charlotte’s eyes widened, and she took a step back. “W-what are you d-doing?”

“We h-have to share body heat.” Now Luke’s teeth were chattering too.

Charlotte swallowed. Could she do it? Could she wrap herself in the embrace of her sworn nemesis, the evilest man on the planet? Well, there were convicted murderers locked away for life, so the evilest man in the building perhaps?

She shuddered with cold. A sharp ache worked its way through her skin and muscle into her sinew, her veins, her very bones.

Even her brain began to feel frozen.

It seemed her options were to either allow this sexy man to wrap her up in his strong arms or to perish from turning into a human icicle. So…she supposed she would take the sexy, evil man.
