Eggs and more eggs

Justice Unhatched
The Exceptional S. Beaufont #5 of 6 (so far!)
Sarah Noffke and Michael Anderle
fantasy, magic. dragons
LMBPN Publishing
(8 May 2020)

The Dragon Elite are growing more powerful.

But so are their enemies.

Dragon eggs have been stolen, but Sophia isn’t deterred.

She will get them back and make the thieves suffer.

Once she figures out where to look for them…

The stakes are higher than ever as Sophia is sent on mission after mission to help the Dragon Elite, do Subner’s bidding and also save those at the Gullington who are still cursed.

Quiet might be better, but the housekeeper for the Castle is still sick.

Sophia won’t stop until she finds a cure for Ainsley.

But to save the eggs, the housekeeper and her friends it’s going to take harnessing the strongest power in the world. And the most elusive.

Can love save everyone?

It is clear that recent events have been woven into this story – for instance social distancing and the value of toilet rolls – and authors also read in the same, and write in the same, book piles as I do. The chewing gum that makes everyone happy and compliant comes from this pile .

But then is one of the authors – note that he turns up as himself in the book – Michael Anderle – knows Ramy Vance and writes with him – see the Middang3ard books.

But seeing this world – the Middle Ages time locked dragon riders through the eyes of a young modern girl gave great twists and humour to the story, especially the conversations with her dragon. For me the series of Sophia and her dragon are really good four to five Stars.

And I think that Sarah Noffke writes excellent fantasy. I have now read all 12 of the Liv Beaufont books! I just can’t wait to find out next what the writers’ imaginations will come up with. I adore Lunis too.

A Birthday in Hell

Fashionably Fooled Book Cover Fashionably Fooled
Hot Damned #13
Robyn Peterman
Romantic Comedy, Paranormal Vampire, Devils and Demons
Independently published
(23 Mar. 2020)

A day in the life of the Devil should be exhilarating—lying, stealing, cheating at poker and finally beating Mr. Rogers…
Life should be wonderful.
Right?
Wrong.

The love of my dastardly immortal life is eating everything that isn’t nailed down and tried to behead me over a chocolate croissant. While I take chocolate croissants very seriously, I do believe decapitation is somewhat harsh.

My daughters, the Seven Deadly Sins, are driving me to drink. Getting them mated off and the hell out of Hell is at the top on my agenda.

The one thing that is keeping me sane—sane being a relative word—is my upcoming special day. After living a millennium and never knowing the date I came to be, I have sussed out the information from my certifiably insane, pole-dancing mother. She’s swears on her empty head that my birthday is April 1st.

Soon, April 1st will mean something. I’m no fool. I plan to make my birthday far more famous than my do-gooder nephew’s. That day in December will be forgotten when I get done making my womb eviction day the most important in the history of the Universe.

I shall simply go about business as usual. Punishments must be doled out and chaos must be encouraged. A vacation would be lovely, but there is no rest for the weary… or the evil. Luckily I know how to have an outstanding time doing outrageously bad things.

Thank Hades, I’m a handsome bastard.

Oh, and Happy Birthday to me.

Another Robyn Peterman delight.

So Satan decides that as he once didn’t exist, he must have been born, and thus had a birthday. Note that his brother, God, has one too.

If you have a birthday, then it only stands to reason you should have a party to celebrate that birthday . But when Satan asks his mother when he was born, his mother is very shifty and won’t tell him exactly when he was born. So, he decides to invent his birthday so that he can have a birthday party. In Hell. And so things develop from there. As you can imagine this book is full of humour, full of strange ideas, full of weird happenings. Robyn Peterman has a really strange imagination, but one that is very funny.

Zinnia and….

Zinnia
Angelbound Offspring #3
Christina Bauer
YA, Fantasy
Monster House Books
July 30th 2019

As the last dragon shifter, I live alone, hiding in one of Earth’s sacred deserts. My human handlers tell me that I have no parents, no name, and no purpose other than to train for battle and one day become a vessel for the reincarnation of Chimera, the greatest dragon shifter of all. Sadly, Chimera’s rebirth will mean my own death. But my handlers say this sacrifice is a noble fate that will rebuild the dragon shifter world

I shall die on my seventeenth birthday. That’s five days from now

Then I hear music thumping across the desert. I take my mortal form, follow the sound, and find humans dancing in what they call a rave. There is a stage and a rock band. One thing quickly becomes clear: Unlike the audience, the musicians are dragon shifters, just like me. And one of them, the guitar player Rhodes, makes my knees turn watery. The lead singer, Kaps, has something strangely familiar about her.

It all adds up to one conclusion: My handlers lied to me. I’m not the last of my kind. Memories reappear. I had parents once. Portia and Tempest. I even had a name. Zinnia. Perhaps I have a reason to live as well. I step past the dancing humans to confront the players.

I will find out the full truth, no matter what.

Excerpt: Chapter One

Tucking my unicorn comforter under my chin, I come to a big decision

  Naptime is for losers.

I may only be nine—well, almost ten—but I know one thing: there are way too many rules for dragon princesses like me. For starters, we’re supposed to take naps every bleeding afternoon. No way. Napping is for babies. That’s why I’m sneaking out today to see my best friend, LT.

Twisting under my covers, I check out my bedroom. There are pink curtains, white furniture, and the royal crest of Furonium over the door. My parents rule all the dragon shifters, so that crest-thingy hangs everywhere. My sisters, Kaps and Huntress, lie in their bunk beds across the room. So you know, my family stays in human form most of the time. No dragon caves for us, thank you very much. Those places have bats

Squinting, I look at my sisters more closely.  Are they really out of it? Can I sneak away?  Like always, Kaps lays half-off the top bunk. Wisps of brown hair hang over her mouth, blowing in and out with her snores. I shake my head

Even asleep, my twin is noisy.

Meanwhile, Huntress rests curled up on her side. Her shoulders rise and fall silently. Huntress never lets out a sound, even when she’s snoozing.

 That settles it.

Both my sisters are totally zonked.

 Time to go.

The Kiss

Slipping out from under my covers, I step toward my balcony. Cool air wafts through the curtains. A chill seeps into my skin, so I pull the tie on my silk robe a little tighter.

One moment, the balcony only frames the sight of a darkened forest and flickering stars. A second later, he is there.

My Rhodes.

My Rhana.

He says nothing, merely crosses the space to stand before me. Rhodes cups my face in his hands. The touch is both warm and electric. My body melts to be so near to him. Moonlight dances across his high cheekbones and strong jawline. His green eyes flicker with desire.

Still silent, he guides my mouth to his. At first, our kiss is gentle. A simple sweep of our lips. Then my Rhodes licks along the seam of my mouth, tempting me to open for him.

So I do.

Our kiss deepens. Suddenly, it’s as if I can’t close enough to my Rhana. Our bodies press together, shifting in a dance that has a rhythm all its own. The electric charge of magic surrounds us.

Yes, this is right.

Pixie Pie

PIXIELAND DIARIES | Book Cover PIXIELAND DIARIES |
Pixieland Diaries Book 1
by Christina Bauer
Sci Fi & Fantasy Teens & YA
Monster House Books
31 Mar 2020

If you don’t like pixies, don’t read this diary. If you don’t like loud-mouthed pixies who are really cool but sometimes get told they’re immature (for no reason), then definitely stop reading. Oh, and if you’re His Awfulness The Elf Prince ‘Dare’ Darius, then you can kiss my butt. My hatred for you burns with the fire of a thousand suns. Thanks for getting me kicked out of Pixieland and exiled to attend some rando human high school on Earth. You’re the worst, even if you have a cute smile. And nice eyes. Your hair looks okay sometimes, too. But you’re still a creep and I loathe you. And to everyone else: if you’ve read this far, then you better finish my entire diary. My story is supernatural, whacked-out, and overall awesome.

Such a cute (not) Pixie growing up with 2 extremely elderly parents inside an acorn – but she has change her size dramatically to fit in. Yes, this Pixie can be multiple sizes. And she is caught up in the usual wars between Fairy Courts, PixieLand and and others of the Fae persuasion.

She is now coming into her majority – which is quite young, but she has been training for more time than others realise and has some very interesting abilities – including being able to manipulate Ley lines. And she proves to have a lot of power and oomph when needed. Not as sweet as her enemies believed.

It seems, according to the Lore, that if you live near Ley Lines – as her village does – humans can have Changeling children, and that is what she believes she is.

This is a rather cute YA story. Well told with lots of magic and suitable storytelling for this age group. Written as a journal with self-reflection.

‘Gone Away: Call back sometime’.

Gone Gods Book Cover Gone Gods
Gone Gods World
Ramy Vance (RE Vance)
Fantasy FairyTales Folklore Humour Urban
Keep Evolving Studios

The gods are gone. All of them.

Their last message to humanity was: "Thank you for believing in us, but it is not enough. We're leaving. Good luck." At first, no one took them seriously. Until, that is, all the denizens of all the heavens and hells started showing up on people's doorsteps.

Creatures once thought of as myth are now refugees striving to adapt to life on Earth. Trouble is, after eons of living forever they're not very good at being mortal.

The following are just a few of their stories ...

LADY GAGA MUST DIE
The one who calls herself Lady Gaga must die.

Lady Gaga must be destroyed, killed—erased. Her insult is too great, her proclamation too inordinate, her aplomb too brazen to be ignored.

Lady Gaga must die because of the claim that she—a mere mortal—is to marry the Night! She proclaims this in song and poetry—just as any houri would do when preparing for battle.

This obscenity cannot go unpunished!

MIC THE LEPRECHAUN
Murtagh the Leprechaun hates his mortality.

Death, in his modest opinion, is just no fun.

Then again, so much about living in the GoneGod world isn’t fun. But such is Murtagh’s lot—not much you can do when the god Manannnan Mic Lir boots you to Earth and closes Mag Mell on a whim.

Who would have thought of such a thing? Heaven closing? Well, not Heaven Heaven, but the earthly paradise that was Murtagh’s home. That place was supposed to be forever, just like Murtagh was supposed to live forever.

Now forever has an expiration date, and for Murtagh … well, the life that’s left in his bones may expand centuries yet, but it, too, has an expiration date swiftly approaching its shelf life.

So Murtagh does his best to live healthy, not get into fights, look both ways before he crosses any street and generally doesn’t do anything that could cause an early demise.

In other words, Murtagh is bored, bored, bored.

This is no life for a leprechaun.
Set in the same universe as Mortality Bites & Keep EvolvingHouse of the GoneGod Damned! follows the lives of the Others as they struggle with their mortality. If you like Linsey Hall, Shannon Mayer, CN Crawford, Ilona Andrews, AL Knorr, or Patricia Briggs, you will LOVE House of the GoneGod Damned!

The Gods have taken a hike! Yes, all the Gods.
Except it turns out- the God of all Insects - and that causes trouble later.
This series, new to me, by Ramy Vance AKA RE Vance_ who sometimes write together- don't ask- posits a new Apocalyptic world. All those mythologies were accurate. But as soon as the Gods decide they've got bored and have moved on, magical creatures all become mortal. And appear on Earth. Often in a rather unexpected manner. And all at the exact same time. Angels fallout of Heaven. Demons fall out of Hell. Of all religions. Fairies, elves, pixies, dwarves appear. The Monster under the Bed is real, every mythological creature; from every culture becomes mortal, and has to find somewhere to live, and away to pay for food and lodging.
This multibook series of series about the GoneGodworld is rich in mythical creatures trying to adapt to a Human and mortal world.
There are heroes and Heroes. Heroines, villains and villainesses. Evil Doers to be vanquished. Great Deeds to be Done. And set in a modern world across different, but mostly north American, scenes, expectations and situations.
I have binged read these books and cannot wait for more to be written_ of all series. Kat. Jean-luc Ela or Dragon Girl. And I rather suspect that Marc will have a series too in the future. Each main character brings something new to the story, and can be read as standalone series or combined. Your choice.
5 stars for originality. Humour.Tristesse. Empathy.Snark. And sheer addictive fun.
