four star - and the dragon plays.. rock

Meet Kaps: renegade, dragon shifter, and general pain in her parent’s backsides. Although born a royal, Kaps loves hunting down dragon artifacts. Too bad L’Griffe, the shifter mafia, wants the same stuff. Kaps gets in their way and ends up with a price on her head. A bounty hunter named Mack comes to collect. Although he’s human, Mack knows all about shifter ways. And what he lacks in shifting power, Mack more than makes up for with a lethal combination of looks, strength, and smarts. After luring the princess away with an epic kiss, Mack slaps some supernatural handcuffs on Kaps, tosses her in a van, and heads off to L’Griffe headquarters with his quarry. The fact that Kaps is really dragon royalty doesn’t bother Mack in the slightest. That kiss might be a problem, though…

Or she hunts down antiquities – and steals them! Which is her prime reason for the tour places I wonder?

We know something about Kaps from her sister’s book – see the list below of the books in order. She has a rock band – and seems not to turn up when expected to sing . But it seems – from this story – that she has something else going on too – something she has been doing since she was really young – treasure hunting. And being a dragon she hoards! All the old and magic and apparently lost items she finds, she hides away in a room only she knows the location of. And always has.

There’s just one small problem – the items she wants, she has to steal, and other people want to stop that from happening.

So this book concentrates on her stealing for her horde and the rock band gets little mention – which I did think was a shame, as her story was so bound up with it. But the rock band it seems is just a cover for her other activities.

Her sister Huntress, is really concerned for her though, as she is getting into deep water, with her parents who want to lock her up so she is protected and safe, and with the people she is stealing from. We learn more about huntress – the last Glass dragon, in the next book in the series.

I would have liked a longer story line and a little more complexity but then I am not really the main audience for this series – for its intended audience I think it works.

A Birthday in Hell

fooled - A Birthday in Hell Fashionably Fooled
Hot Damned #13
Robyn Peterman
Romantic Comedy, Paranormal Vampire, Devils and Demons
Independently published
(23 Mar. 2020)
four star - A Birthday in Hell

A day in the life of the Devil should be exhilarating—lying, stealing, cheating at poker and finally beating Mr. Rogers…
Life should be wonderful.
Right?
Wrong.

The love of my dastardly immortal life is eating everything that isn’t nailed down and tried to behead me over a chocolate croissant. While I take chocolate croissants very seriously, I do believe decapitation is somewhat harsh.

My daughters, the Seven Deadly Sins, are driving me to drink. Getting them mated off and the hell out of Hell is at the top on my agenda.

The one thing that is keeping me sane—sane being a relative word—is my upcoming special day. After living a millennium and never knowing the date I came to be, I have sussed out the information from my certifiably insane, pole-dancing mother. She’s swears on her empty head that my birthday is April 1st.

Soon, April 1st will mean something. I’m no fool. I plan to make my birthday far more famous than my do-gooder nephew’s. That day in December will be forgotten when I get done making my womb eviction day the most important in the history of the Universe.

I shall simply go about business as usual. Punishments must be doled out and chaos must be encouraged. A vacation would be lovely, but there is no rest for the weary… or the evil. Luckily I know how to have an outstanding time doing outrageously bad things.

Thank Hades, I’m a handsome bastard.

Oh, and Happy Birthday to me.

Another Robyn Peterman delight.

So Satan decides that as he once didn’t exist, he must have been born, and thus had a birthday. Note that his brother, God, has one too.

If you have a birthday, then it only stands to reason you should have a party to celebrate that birthday . But when Satan asks his mother when he was born, his mother is very shifty and won’t tell him exactly when he was born. So, he decides to invent his birthday so that he can have a birthday party. In Hell. And so things develop from there. As you can imagine this book is full of humour, full of strange ideas, full of weird happenings. Robyn Peterman has a really strange imagination, but one that is very funny.

Sweep the Inn’s Porch

Sweep with Me
The Innkeeper Series #1-5
Ilona Andrews.
Fantasy Romance, Shifters, Werewolves and Vampires, Paranormal romance
Independently published
(13 Jan. 2020)

A charming, short novella in the Innkeeper Chronicles, from #1 New York Times bestselling author, Ilona Andrews. Thank you for joining us at Gertrude Hunt, the nicest Bed and Breakfast in Red Deer, Texas, during the Treaty Stay. As you know, we are honor-bound to accept all guests during this oldest of innkeeper holidays and we are expecting a dangerous guest. Or several. But have no fear. Your safety and comfort is our first priority. The inn and your hosts, Dina Demille and Sean Evans, will defend you at all costs. [But we hope we don’t have to.]

Every winter, Innkeepers look forward to celebrating their own special holiday, which commemorates the ancient treaty that united the very first Inns and established the rules that protect them, their intergalactic guests, and the very unaware/oblivious people of [planet] Earth. By tradition, the Innkeepers welcomed three guests: a warrior, a sage, and a pilgrim, but during the holiday, Innkeepers must open their doors to anyone who seeks lodging. Anyone.

All Dina hopes is that the guests and conduct themselves in a polite manner. But what’s a holiday without at least one disaster?

I have read Ilona Andrews before and thus knew that I would enjoy this series. What I didn’t realise was just how much!

This is a series of books about magic and aliens. Yes it’s true, vampires do feature quite a lot, indeed a whole book covers vampire society. But be aware, these vampires do not drink blood nor are they unable to come out in the sun. They are a variant on the human genome with fangs, extra tall, very.muscled, and. very fierce! They always wear armor and love to fight…

Our Inn and its magic is a wonderful device to introduce us to alien worlds and species; customs; food; behaviour, and so on… We visit a market world (just like a Moroccan souk but better), vampire worlds, hidden worlds and worlds at war. We discover amazing weapons and poisonous. plants, we empathise and get angry at the guests’ situations, and want to meet the amazing chef and and eat his food.

So let go of rational and logical thought. The sun bends reality and defies no laws of physics – dig into your imagination – to above all – believe in the Inn, and that maybe, just maybe, this hidden place could exist next door to you, without you ever realising.

Fighting Grannies

were - Fighting Grannies Were we Belong
#5 Shift Happens
Robyn Peterman
Paranormal Romance and Demons
Independently published
(14 Jan. 2019)
four star - Fighting Grannies

I need a new freakin’ job. It’s not what you think. I’m desperate to resign from the Werewolf Treaty Federation aka WTF. Don’t judge. I didn’t name this crew of misfit Shifters so hear me out. After investigating a deadly Jazz Cabbage outbreak, I discover we need a necromancing Demon to help solve the crime. As luck would have it, my gay Vampyre BFF, Dwayne, dated one of these gems several decades ago. Seems all we need to do is summon his evil butt into this plane of existence and poof, crisis solved. The question is, can we bring him back without causing a flesh-eating, end of the world Zombie Apocalypse? With my hunky mate, insane Granny and flamboyant Dwayne by my side, we have no choice but to succeed. If we don’t, the reveal of our existence to the human world is imminent. We are Shifters. Werewolves. WTF. Shift Happens all the time. But this time, we’re making sure only good shift goes down.

As always, Robyn brings humour to her writing and I adore Granny, As an older person myself, I find her an inspiration and her fighting skills amazing! I only wish....
The Council that covers Weres and makes the rules, gets new members and the family, rather surprisingly, acquires new members.

So, in the end, we get a satisfactory, if gruesome ending

Knit yourself a vampire?

vampknit - Knit yourself a vampire? The Vampire knitting club & Stitches and Witches
Vampire Knitting Club (7 Book Series)
Nancy Warren
Ambleside Publishing
(4 Oct. 2018)
four star - Knit yourself a vampire?

Vampires who knit
A troublemaking witch
Who killed Granny — and is she really dead?

At a crossroads between a cringe-worthy past (Todd the Toad) and an uncertain future (she's not exactly homeless, but it's close), Lucy Swift travels to Oxford to visit her grandmother. With Gran's undying love to count on and Cardinal Woolsey's, Gran's knitting shop, to keep her busy, Lucy can catch her breath and figure out what she's going to do.

Except it turns out that Gran is the undying. Or at least, the undead. But there's a death certificate. And a will, leaving the knitting shop to Lucy. And a lot of people going in and out who never use the door—including Gran, who is just as loving as ever, and prone to knitting sweaters at warp speed, late at night. What exactly is going on?

When Lucy discovers that Gran did not die peacefully in her sleep, but was murdered, she has to bring the killer to justice without tipping off the law that there's no body in the grave. Between a hot 600-year-old vampire and a dishy detective inspector, both of whom always seem to be there for her, Lucy finds her life getting more complicated than a triple cable cardigan.
The only one who seems to know what's going on is her cat ... or is it ... her familiar?

First in a new series of paranormal cozy mysteries with bite!

A Vampire Kitty and knitting circles – 2 books reviewed.

So there is this nice and cosy, old fashioned, Oxford Knitting shop. With a secret.

And the secret is huge… and involves knitting and vampires.

I am surprised that students in Oxford have enough money to buy knitting wool, but I guess if they are at Oxford, and studying law, maybe they have rich parents. I am also surprised how much trade a knitting shop has – these days it’s tricky to make a living from them, the wool is so expensive, but if you know vampires, and they can knit a jumper in a night, and they have lots of cash then anything is possible.

I read the first 2 books in this series and found book 1 better than book 2, mainly because the big secret is out and thus book 2 had less to offer. I shall not be following up the series further.
